Quick answer: A standard 53ft dry van holds 26 standard 48×40 in (GMA) pallets in a single floor layer — 13 straight down each side — or up to 52 pallets double-stacked when the cargo is light enough and stays under the trailer’s weight limit. Turn the pallets and you can fit 28–30 by mixing orientations, but 26 is the number most shippers plan to because it loads square and leaves the forklift room to work.
The catch is the same one that trips up container loads: a 53ft trailer runs out of weight long before it runs out of floor. A dry van tops out around ~45,000 lb of payload, so 26 pallets means roughly 1,700 lb per pallet before you’re overweight. Dense freight hits that ceiling with the trailer still half-empty.

The ~100 in interior width is the number that decides the layout: two 40 in-wide pallets sit side by side (80 in) with room to spare, but two 48 in-wide pallets (96 in) only just fit and leave no working clearance. That’s why orientation matters so much on a trailer — more on that below.

The trailer floor is ~636 in long × ~100 in wide. Here’s how the standard 48×40 pallet tiles into it:
Pallets loaded “straight” (40 in face across the width) Two 40 in-wide pallets sit side by side (80 in, well within 100 in). Down the 636 in length you get 48 in per pallet: 636 ÷ 48 ≈ 13 rows. That’s 2 × 13 = 26 pallets — the classic answer.
Pallets “turned” (48 in face across the width) Two 48 in-wide pallets across the width (96 in) fit, and each is now 40 in deep: 636 ÷ 40 ≈ 15 rows, giving 30. In practice, mixing straight and turned rows (“pinwheeling”) is how loaders squeeze 28–30 pallets in — but it’s slower to load and needs the freight to allow tight side clearance.

Doubling the floor count to ~52 assumes two things hold:
A 53ft trailer load can be under its 80,000 lb gross vehicle weight and still be illegal — because too much weight has landed on the drive axles or the trailer tandems. US federal limits cap a single axle at 20,000 lb and a tandem axle group at 34,000 lb, and the Federal Bridge Formula tightens that further depending on axle spacing.
Load your heaviest pallets at the nose and you overload the drives; pile them at the tail and you overload the trailer tandems. The fix is weight distribution — spreading dense pallets along the length so each axle group stays legal. Twenty-six is a starting point. Real trailer loads mix pallet sizes and weights, need a nose-to-door loading sequence, and have to keep every axle group legal. Eyeballing it leaves paid-for space empty or, worse, puts you over an axle limit you can’t see until the weighbridge.
