Global chokepointEast AsiaThe main north–south lane between the Northeast Asian manufacturing belt and everywhere south of it. A very large share of the world's container fleet passes through it in a normal year, and the surrounding airspace carries a significant share of Asian air cargo.
- Ships can route east of Taiwan through the Philippine Sea. The detour costs sea days rather than blocking the trade outright — this is a delay-and-cost chokepoint, not a hard closure risk.
